THE 3 V's OF BIG DATA
VOLUME
In relation to social media, Volume refers to the amount of data generated through websites, portals and applications. According to B2C businesses, volume enlarges the available data that is out there and it needs to be assessed for relevance. Facebook has 2 billion users, Youtube has 1 billion users, Twitter has 350 million users and Instagram has 700 million users. Each day users contribute billions of posts, pictures, videos, tweets etc and an insanely large amount or volume of data is generated every minute of the day.
VELOCITY
Velocity refers to the speed at which data is being generated. Everyday 900 million photos are uploaded on Facebook, 500 million tweets are posted on Twitter, 0.4 million hours of video are uploaded on Youtube and 3.5 billion searches are performed in Google. Such a huge amount of data is like a nuclear data explosion. Big data helps the companies to accept the incoming flow of data and process it fast so that it doesnt create a bottleneck.
VARIETY
In Big Data, Variety refers to all the structured and unstructured data that has the possibility of getting generated by either machines or by humans. Texts, tweets, pictures and videos are elements of structured data, whereas email, voicemails, ECG reading, audio recordings etc are important elements of unstructured data under variety. Variety is fundamentally being able to classify incoming data into various categories.
